SAVE DARFUR
Illustrating the Importance of Divestment
In March 2007, Crowley & Co. had the privilege of working with the Save Darfur Coalition.
The result was the design and production of two graphics that illustrate first, the contribution US investments are making to the genocide in Sudan and, second, a solution via a divestment strategy developed by the Sudan Divestment Task Force.

Darfur has been embroiled in a deadly conflict for over three years. At least 400,000 people have been killed; more than 2 million innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes and now live in displaced-persons camps in Sudan or in refugee camps in neighboring Chad; and more than 3.5 million men, women, and children are completely reliant on international aid for survival. Not since the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has the world seen such a calculated campaign of displacement, starvation, rape, and mass slaughter.
U.S. law prohibits most American companies from operating directly in Sudan. However, U.S. firms are legally able to invest in foreign companies that operate in Sudan, including "highest offenders" that make a significant contribution to funding the genocide.
Many U.S. investment companies, including Fidelity and Berkshire Hathaway, invest in PetroChina, Sinopec, ONGC, Petronas, Schlumberger, and other highest offending companies. Consequently, many individual investors are supporting the genocide without their knowledge.
The Save Darfur Coalition is working to make investors aware of how their money is being used and encourage them to take action against the firms that continue to invest in companies that are financing the genocide.

"Deirdre was terrific and helped deliver a very successful retreat for the Columbia University Student Services team.
She was a pleasure to work with and was able to familiarize herself with our world quite quickly. It was also a good opportunity to introduce some people to graphic facilitation and I suspect that some folks will reach out to Deirdre in the future, having experienced first-hand its benefits. It really made the retreat the success I hoped it would be."
